New Final Cut Studio or Finally Going Back to Premiere?

Since Final Cut Studio is still the primary piece of software I use, I'll be glad to move into the new millennium.  This article from Apple Insider gives the latest scoop.

To paraphrase, the new version appears to be a nearly complete overhaul of the current one with "dramatic and ambitious" changes.  If you don't read the article, at least take this snippet:
Last May, AppleInsider reported that Apple's Final Cut Studio suite was being retooled to better meet the needs of the company's mainstream base of prosumers and advanced home users. However, after Final Cut Pro users expressed concern over the prospect, Apple issued an official statement claiming that "the next version of Final Cut Pro will be awesome and [Apple's] pro customers are going to love it."

I underscored that last bit because nothing says "professional" to me more than the word 'awesome'.  I imagine Steve Jobs will tell us at the release that it's 'magical' too.

I've talked to a few people who are really enjoying the revamped Adobe Premiere Pro - particularly the 64bit architecture - and the integration with After Effects.  As someone who has come to rely more and more on After Effects in my workflow, I must say it's an attractive prospect.

What to do?  What to do?

A few years ago, FCP was killing Premiere in terms of camera hardware support. P2 cards were out for like 2 years before Adobe had a way to work with the footage. FCP solutions weren't always the most elegant (see "Log and Transfer") but they were introduced quickly, like the same week a new camera went on sale.

However, it looks like Apple has been resting on their laurels and Adobe has been working hard to get that market share back. I'll be interested to see what happens with the new FCP. Hopefully more star wipes. It's hard to do professional video work without good transitions like "Venetian Blinds".

Well if it's Venetian Blinds you want, you could always try to score an Amiga VideoToaster on eBay!
